FOLKLORE: HALLOWEEN ART MACABRE LIFE DRAWING AT TOWNER

Make macabre marks and get sketching this Samhain! Take part in a theatrical life drawing salon with a deathly twist...Art Macabre is back for one night only for Halloween at Towner in Eastbourne! Celebrate Halloween in Sussex in style with us for 2024.

Take inspiration from a costumed model as they pose with props, projections and an atmospheric soundtrack to conjure up tales of forgotten folklore. During the session you will be guided through narration and storytelling, with the host suggesting materials and drawing prompts.

All levels of drawing confidence welcome and all materials provided (charcoal, pencils, oil pastels), but feel free to bring a favourite pen or sketchbook. No paints / wet materials, please. Drinks and snacks will be available to purchase from Towner's bar throughout the event.

Hosted by Originary Arts (originary.co.uk), a Brighton based arts company who believe that everyone can enjoy being creative given the right inspiration, tools and support. Originary Arts have held life drawing workshops at galleries, museums and festivals around the UK including Tate, National Gallery and Tower of London.

UNIQLO TATE PLAY: THE GARDEN OF DOODLED DELIGHT

A drop-in free families workshop that will encourage you to doodle, layer up mixed media and play with layers of colour and texture.

This workshop will take inspiration from Tate Modern’s latest Turbine Hall installation. From 20 July to 26 August 2024, Tate Modern’s Turbine Hall will be transformed by Oscar Murillo’s new installation The flooded garden. Taking inspiration from Claude Monet’s Water Lilies and the garden in which he painted them, visitors will be invited to paint water and waves onto a monumental wall of canvas, creating a layered, collaborative painting of epic proportions.

Come and create your own layered artwork, mark making with pastels, crayon and paint markers on acetate, to take home with you. Inspired by the concepts and techniques of Oscar Murillo and Claude Monet’s Water Lilies artworks.

Originary Arts invites you to pay tribute to the iconic circus artist Miss La La! Roll up, roll up and sketch contemporary aerialist and hula hooper Blaze Tarsha as she performs and poses for your drawing delight.

Part of National Gallery’s Friday Late, this event is free and materials are provided. All ages are welcome.

We will explore the legacy of Miss La La, as part of the Degas exhibition of sketches and paintings of her. Come conjure up the spirit of vintage French circus with us!

Blaze Tarsha is a talented and versatile performer that brings a special and unique presence to any performance. BSpecialising in rotating hoop, Hula Hoop and Physical theatre.

Explore and experiment with your own expressive mark-making at our drawing event presented by Originary Arts. 

The session takes inspiration from Dame Paula Rego’s monumental painting ‘Crivelli’s Garden’, which depicts courageous and strong women found in Biblical history and folklore. Originary Arts will guide you through making your own sketches, portraits and doodles, whatever your level of ability.

Explore the strange beauty of mini-beasts and their mythology. Take inspiration from creatures who feature in stories from around the world, from arachnid tricksters to grumpy snails from Danish fairytales. All ages can get ready to wriggle, wiggle and waggle dance at The Ugly Bug Ball, with insect-inspired moves and grooves.

Join artist Nikki Shaill and creative company Originary Arts for an evening of life drawing inspired by the colour, form and experimentation of Post-Impressionist artworks.

Explore and experiment with your own expressive mark making at our drawing event presented by Originary Arts. Play with pattern, colour and line using pens, pencil and paper, taking inspiration from costumed models and props, whose poses take their cues from our exhibition 'After Impressionism: Inventing Modern Art'.

Tableaux will showcase the colour palettes, sculptural forms and themes of these paintings, with particular focus on the women artists and figures portrayed of the time, including Sonia Delaunay’s paintings and Camille Claudel’s sculptures. Bringing to life some of the artworks and conjuring up the playful spirit and vibrancy of the exhibition, Originary Arts will guide you through making your own sketches, portraits and doodles, whatever your level of ability.

Explore two new exhibitions Alice Neel: Hot Off the Griddle and RESOLVE Collective: them’s the breaks after hours at this Members' Late.

You'll have the chance to hear from the experts at curator talks and creatively engage with the exhibition themes at interactive creative workshops led by Originary Arts, a Brighton-based company founded by Nikki Shaill focusing on play and participation. Plus, you can hear a set from the DJ collective Sisu, enjoy drinks from our Garden Room bar and find the perfect memento from your night with an increased 20% discount in the Shop.

This event is open to Barbican Members and Members Plus and up to three guests. Guests will require their own ticket. The event will run 6-9pm; the exhibitions will open at 6:30pm.

Portraits & Placards with Originary Arts, Conservatory Terrace, 6-9pm

Create bold and colourful portraits of fellow Members, taking inspiration from the vivid style of Alice Neel and challenging yourself to observe and get to know the people posing through the act of drawing them. Members and your guests are invited to take turns to pose alone or in pairs for 10-15 minutes each in our pop-up portrait studio. Take your lead from Neel's ability to represent her sitters with characteristic warmth and empathy, making marks in a range of materials that help express and capture those who courageously pose. Sitters will also create their own placards to pose with, to express what matters to them. If you're interested in posing, email us at membership@barbican.org.uk by noon on Tues 21 Mar and we'll give you a special Barbican gift for taking part.

Concrete Poetry with Originary Arts, Conservatory Well, 6.9pm

Inspired by them’s the breaks, Originary Arts invite you to play with words. Remix words and phrases that have been dissected from a range of different institutions’ publications, policies and press releases. Create new patterns of poetry and prose that give these established documents fresh meaning and new contexts as they are broken down and remixed. Cut and stick words onto paper bricks to cumulatively build a wall of words together across the evening and see if any communal meanings or messages emerge between the cracks.

Come along to capture and celebrate her current body, before it changes. Bring your paints, crayons, pencils, biros or favourite things to create with and on. Some basic materials will be provided. Imagine if a still life came to life! We’re back for more after hours life drawing fun at National Gallery.

Originary Arts invites you to 'Tutti Frutti Drawing', a playful life drawing and colourful collage workshop in Room 30 by Juan de Zurbarán’s ‘Still Life with Lemons in a Wicker Basket’.

Taking inspiration from the Gallery's still lifes, Brighton's participatory arts company Originary Arts brings fun fruity themed theatrical life drawing scenes to inspire your artworks. Expect costumed characters, colour pop props and surreal size-shifting sets to get your creative juices flowing this summer accompanied by a zesty and bright playlist to create and make to.

Everyone is welcome to come and play with colour, drawing and collage.

This is a drop-in session and materials are limited but you are welcome to use your own sketchbook and pens or pencils. Materials will be provided for those who need them!

FREE but booking required, via National Gallery website HERE. This workshop is available on a first come, first served basis. Places are limited to 50 participants at one time.

Want to come and learn about the events industry? Want to get creative making designs to decorate a festival site? GB MET and 1BTN are partnering to provide an insight into the festival & event

industry. Work alongside industry professionals (that’s us, Originary Arts!) and take part in creative festival design & decor workshops! From willow lantern making to illuminate the woods, to printmaking flags and bunting to be hung up on site, and using textiles to make colourful chandeliers. A really fun and accessible series of FREE workshops for anyone aged 16 to 25 years old.

The festival that the decor will be displayed is called WHERE LOVE LIVES and is run by 1BTN, a local radio station in Brighton and Hove. There’ll be the chance to help install the decorations on site too!

UP LATE: BRITISH FLOWERS WEEK AT THE GARDEN MUSEUM

Originary Arts returns to the Garden Museum once again, this time for Up Late, part of British Flowers Week. Join us in creating a floral Time Capsule! We invite you to create submissions to go into a time capsule, buried at the Garden Museum, and to be opened in at least 200 years time.

Originary Arts invites you to write about and draw your favourite flowers, share flower memories, or descriptions and drawings of flowers you want to be remembered in the future. Imagining 200 years and beyond in the future, it’s an opportunity to help preserve the memory of current flowers for future generations and also capture a moment in time for future generations.

There’ll also be sound and music performances by Laura Misch, floral cocktails served in the garden, amazing floral installations in the museum by Frida Kim, Harriet Parry, Kate Wren, McQueen’s Flowers and Wagner Kreusch, and more to explore.

This Up Late at the Garden Museum for British Flowers Week is inspired by the intersection of art, technology and nature. Among the floral installations created by five of Britain's top florists, discover activities and performances with an optimistic take on the future of bringing more nature into our built environments.

REMINISCENTS: A scented memories project, part of Third Thursdays

What stories do scents tell? How can connecting creatively with our sense of smell allow us to remember? Originary Arts presents a mixed media exhibition in the window of Lush with artwork and stories. Reminiscents is a new project, supported by Third Thursdays, exploring the power of smell to help evoke and express memories.

Originary Arts invited participants of different ages from across Brighton and Hove’s community to create their own unique ‘smell maps’ of the city. Curator and artist Nikki Shaill has been collecting people’s scented memories through workshops in libraries. As part of the window display, artwork by students from Greater Brighton Metropolitan College alongside window art by Nikki Shaill. Plus audio memories and collected stories from local community members including The Network of International Women for Brighton and Hove.

Lush will also stay open late to allow you to come and sample the smells that inspired some of the artwork.

Originary Arts curate playful and participatory arts and creativity for curious people. Originary create multi-sensory arts events in collaboration with communities of all ages, shapes and sizes. From poetry to printmaking, paper cutting to puppetry, play to performances at festivals, museums, galleries and more.

TATE LATE: SURREALISM BEYOND BORDERS

Surrealist Sketching with Originary Arts at March’s Tate Late. Free to participate, join us at Tate Modern as part of the next Tate Late. Featuring model/artist/performer Angel Ito, Originary Arts invites you to play the Surrealist drawing game ‘Exquisite Corpse’ with friends old and new, plus create artworks inspired by our costumed life model and surrealist scenes throughout the evening.

Inspired by the exhibition Surrealism Beyond Borders, drop in anytime to take part in collaborative drawing making and capture our uncanny and dreamlike scenes. Tate Late presents a line-up of film, workshops, conversation, food and a music programme curated by award winning musician Celeste. Activities on offer will include surrealist sketching by Originary Arts, and dream mapping workshops, as well as film screenings and talks exploring lucid dreaming, tarot and witchcraft. For the first time, Celeste will perform live from Tate Modern, with her soothing vocals taking over the vast space of the gallery’s Turbine Hall. The performance will be livestreamed from the artist’s YouTube channel. Over in the Starr cinema, Tate Collective members will have the chance to view an exclusive special screening of Celeste’s new music video alongside the Tate Collective Reframed video and will hear from the artist herself about how she took inspiration from Salvador Dali’s Metamorphosis of Narcissus.

This summer for one day only, the Garden Museum will be transformed into a wonderland of circus, storytelling, and magic. Originary Arts will be part of the Festival of Fairytales! Tickets are £15 each here.

The Festival of Fairytales is a new event for children aged 4 – 10, set against the backdrop of the Garden Museum’s home of a medieval church. Be guided by the genie through a world of gnomes and butterflies, golden fish and magic, and make a wish on a tree.

Children will be free to explore the Museum and discover pop-up performers, craft workshops, storytelling, music and circus performances. Highlights include performances by contemporary Malawian folk band Nkomba, circus street performer Logy on Fire, and storyteller Lauren and the Storybox, and Originary Arts will be hosting a paper theatre, where children are invited to recreate the fairytale of the Golden Fish through collage.

The Garden Café will host a BBQ in the gardens and the Museum’s head gardener, Matt Collins, will be planting wishing tree seeds for kids to take home with them.

We’re excited to be running another Brooklyn Art Library online workshop! After our winter solstice one was attended by 250 people from around the globe, we are back to mark the summer solstice this time. Nikki Shaill (aka @OriginaryArts) invites you to play with bold and bright splashes and scribbles of color this summer! Sharing inspiring images and sensory stimulus from the British seaside and her hometown Brighton, this workshop will provide a taste of the great British seaside. Looking to the vibrant sights, sounds, shapes and shades of the beach for ideas, bring along your most colorful marker pens/crayons/collage materials! Join Nikki for a virtual trip to the seaside and explore adding lots of color to your sketchbook as we celebrate the middle of summer.

Doodle and have fun at this playful and experimental drawing workshop.

Suggested materials:

- At least two or three different coloured marker pens / felt tip pens

- Crayons/pastels

- Colourful pencils

- Collage materials (optional), scissors and glue

- any different colourful drawing materials

- paper / sketchbook (at least 10 different pages/pieces)

Back for a second year, we are blooming excited for The Powerful Flower Show again! A creative collaboration with Colourful Minds, for the month of May you can contribute your flower powered arts and crafts creative projects to The Powerful Flower Show! Simply get creating and making anything that your imagination desires, as long as it is inspired by or rooted in all things flower-powered, then tag us on Instagram or send us your creations via DM to then join our online garden gallery!

Look out for guest artist tutorials, insta live workshops and lots of inspiration on both our Instagram and also Colourful Minds!

Last year, we had hundreds of people from across the UK and internationally participate and show us their amazing flower inspired creations from costumes to embroidery, printing to painting and toilet roll crafts so anything goes. The Originarium is an exhibition of curious creatures dreamt up by the children of Little Green Pig’s after school clubs in collaboration with Nikki Shaill. Paper collages made by Nikki, based on the creative writing, will be on display throughout April at Dog and Bone Gallery- the smallest gallery in Brighton! Held in two renovated red phone boxes, come and discover these creations throughout the month of April on a walk!

The Originarium is an imagined menagerie of curious chimeras created by Nikki Shaill aka Originary Arts, in collaboration with young writers from Little Green Pig. A playful participatory arts project. Meet the Snorse, Flyphibian and other unique creatures- hatched from a mysterious giant egg washed up on Brighton beach! Nikki invited local children, aged six to ten, to conjure up these weird and wondrous beasts together through a series of creative workshops held online via Little Green Pig’s after school clubs. The Originarium brings the children’s writing to life through Nikki’s paper artworks. Thanks to curator Amber Elise and Sam Toft for allowing this exhibition to happen at Dog and Bone. And special thanks to the story mentors, workshop leaders and the young writers of Little Green Pig for their creativity in the digital workshops Nikki led, coming up with these 8 incredible unique ideas for creatures! FESTIVE FOLKLORE: ONLINE LIFE DRAWING WORKSHOP

A special festive sketching celebration. Originary Arts x Art Macabre present an online Zoom life drawing workshop. Mark the night of Saturnalia exploring the traditional pagan roots of festive folklore, rites and rituals from around Europe. Sketch our model duo as they pose wearing symbols and costumes to summon up imagery of pagan goddesses, winter witches, snow queens and the darker deities of December.

Get into the festive spirit with sketching together to a specially curated atmospheric soundtrack. Bring your own gluhwein (mulled wine) or hot chocolate to keep you toasty whilst we summon up the winter spirits!

Use whatever you choose to create, inspired by the scenes on your screens, whether in pen/crayon/paint/collage or any material of your choice.

Zoom link information will be shared a week before the event with everyone. One ticket required per person attending, or purchase the 'Huddle' ticket to allow you to sketch together with two or more people in your household via one screen!
