Join us after hours and get behind-the-scenes of Hot Off the Griddle and them's the breaks at an evening of art, talks, DJs, drinks, and workshops with Originary Arts.
Explore two new exhibitions Alice Neel: Hot Off the Griddle and RESOLVE Collective: them’s the breaks after hours at this Members' Late.
You'll have the chance to hear from the experts at curator talks and creatively engage with the exhibition themes at interactive creative workshops led by Originary Arts, a Brighton-based company founded by Nikki Shaill focusing on play and participation. Plus, you can hear a set from the DJ collective Sisu, enjoy drinks from our Garden Room bar and find the perfect memento from your night with an increased 20% discount in the Shop.
This event is open to Barbican Members and Members Plus and up to three guests. Guests will require their own ticket. The event will run 6-9pm; the exhibitions will open at 6:30pm.
Portraits & Placards with Originary Arts, Conservatory Terrace, 6-9pm
Create bold and colourful portraits of fellow Members, taking inspiration from the vivid style of Alice Neel and challenging yourself to observe and get to know the people posing through the act of drawing them. Members and your guests are invited to take turns to pose alone or in pairs for 10-15 minutes each in our pop-up portrait studio. Take your lead from Neel's ability to represent her sitters with characteristic warmth and empathy, making marks in a range of materials that help express and capture those who courageously pose. Sitters will also create their own placards to pose with, to express what matters to them. If you're interested in posing, email us at membership@barbican.org.uk by noon on Tues 21 Mar and we'll give you a special Barbican gift for taking part.
Concrete Poetry with Originary Arts, Conservatory Well, 6.9pm
Inspired by them’s the breaks, Originary Arts invite you to play with words. Remix words and phrases that have been dissected from a range of different institutions’ publications, policies and press releases. Create new patterns of poetry and prose that give these established documents fresh meaning and new contexts as they are broken down and remixed. Cut and stick words onto paper bricks to cumulatively build a wall of words together across the evening and see if any communal meanings or messages emerge between the cracks.
